Clearing Your DNS Cache

Sometimes your computer will keep old information about a website in memory and you may need to clear it out.

Windows XP

  1. From the Start menu select RUN.
  2. Type cmd in the Run box and click OKAY.
  3. At the command prompt, type ipconfig /flushdns then click ENTER (remember the space after ipconfig).
  4. Next type ipconfig /registerdns and then click ENTER (remember the space after ipconfig).
  5. If the site still will not resolve and it is set up properly, then the domain name is being cached upstream at your Internet Service Provider or at a network DNS server. In this case you may have to wait up to 24 hours for the new DNS information to resolve.
NOTE: Sometimes if you try the URL without the www. in front, that version may resolve right away (or vica-versa if you've been trying it without the www.)

 Mac OS X

  1. Hard Disk > Applications > Utilities > Terminal
  2. At the command prompt type dscacheutil -flushcache

Mac OS X (pre-Leopard)

  1. Hard Disk > Applications > Utilities > Terminal
  2. At the command prompt type lookupd -flushcache
